These homemade gummies are very easy to make, and the recipe is very flexible. If you read my blog post on collagen and gelatin, you’ll know that adding gelatin in your diet can be super beneficial. This is a great way to start eating more gelatin on a regular basis!
Thoughts on Ingredients
You can use almost any sort of fruit juice, but beware with fruits like mango and pineapple – they contain an enzyme called bromelain which will break down the gelatin. The solution is to boil the juice before combining with the gelatin. Make sure to let the juice cool down first – if the liquid is too hot, the gelatin will break down too!
Theoretically, you could use any sort of juice – not just fruit juice. I haven’t been brave enough to try this with pickle brine, but someone out there probably is.
You’ll want to use high quality gelatin. I use NuNaturals gelatin powder because the cows are pasture-raised, and I think it’s pretty high quality gelatin. It smells beefy at first, but the taste goes away with heat.
What You Need
- A silicone tray to form your gummies – this recipe is for a standard 3×5 tray
- 1/4 cup of gelatin powder
- Fruit juice
- 2 wide and shallow bowls to bloom your gelatin
- Small pot
- Spatula / whisk / other mixing utensil
The Recipe
- In each bowl, pour 1/2 cup of juice and then sprinkle the gelatin evenly on the surface – the gelatin will “bloom” as it combines with the liquid, and this makes it less likely to clump
- Let the gelatin bloom for 10-15 min
- Combine the gelatin/juice mix with the rest of the fruit juice in a pot over low heat
- Stir gently with a spatula or a whisk
- Pour the mixture into a silicone tray (to make moving the tray into the fridge easier, I slide a cutting board underneath it)
- Refrigerate overnight
- Enjoy!
